Camera KX-Kymo
KX-Kymo is a stroboscopic-kymographic camera that can perform both: stroboscopic examinations of the vocal cords and kymographic imaging with still light source. The strobe function is the same as the KX-02 camera.
What is kymography good for?
A kymogram is unique information for a phoniatrist, providing the doctor with more information than stroboscopy and, in addition, it can be obtained even in cases where the stroboscopy examination does not work due to the inability to obtain a basetone. A kymogram requires a recording of 100 ms, while 100 ms is the shortest time in stroboscopy for which a basetone can be obtained, and the video must be at least a few seconds long. Kymography has a scientific justitification, of course and there are tons of papers about this method and results in clinical cases.
What exactly is a kymogram?
The visual information provided to the physician consists of two parts. The first part is an overview image used for navigation on the vocal cords and to indicate the specific location on the vocal cords from which the kymogram is obtained. The second part is the kymogram itself. A kymogram is therefore visual data from a high-speed camera, in our case 6500 frames per second, where an image corresponding to the area below the green line on the overview image is superimposed. So, essentially, 6500 times per second, we look at what is happening below the green line, and for greater clarity, we display all these image segments from the area below the green line one below the other.
On a kymogram, the doctor can observe whether both vocal cords are vibrating, whether the amplitude is the same, how large it is, how long the vocal cords remain open compared to the duration of closure, and whether the vocal cords close completely at all. They can observe the symmetry of the vibration, the phase shift of the vibration, how long a single vibration lasts, and how this duration changes. Advanced features suitable for observation include the sharpness of the peaks—both medial and lateral—as well as various aberrations.
All of these findings provide the doctor with more information than laryngostroboscopy alone.
Regulatory
The camera passed all the test required by MDR regarding electric safety, EMC and protection in accredited lab. The camera has a CE Mark, it is registered in EUDAMED and it is available for the whole EU market.
